Biotech Companies Hire New HR Talent

Two biotechnology companies announced senior HR leadership changes in August, bringing on experienced executives to support what both firms described as periods of growth and organizational scaling.

Avenzo Therapeutics hires Wedel as CHRO

Connie Wedel has been named chief human resources officer at Avenzo Therapeutics, a biotech firm focused on developing oncology therapies. She most recently served as chief people officer at Cytek Biosciences, a cell analysis solutions company, where she led global HR, workforce strategy, total rewards, organizational design and culture initiatives.

Wedel’s appointment comes at a time when Avenzo is poised for significant growth. While the company did not provide specific details about its current headcount, the addition of a seasoned HR executive like Wedel suggests plans for substantial expansion. In a statement, Wedel said she looks forward to building on Avenzo’s existing foundation and investments in its people during this growth phase. This indicates that Avenzo has already laid a solid groundwork for its expansion, with Wedel’s role being to capitalize on this foundation and drive further development.

Nurix Therapeutics appoints Burwell to lead HR

Wes Burwell joined Nurix Therapeutics as chief human resources officer on August 20. Nurix develops targeted protein degradation medicines for patients with cancer and inflammatory diseases. Burwell brings more than 20 years of HR experience to the role, with a proven track record in scaling organizations through rapid growth.

Burwell was most recently vice president of HR at Bolt Biotherapeutics, where he played a key role in managing the company’s rapid expansion. His appointment at Nurix follows a period of organizational development for the company, which has been building out its leadership team as it advances its pipeline of protein degradation candidates through clinical development. This suggests that Nurix is preparing for a significant shift in its organizational structure to accommodate its growing pipeline and anticipated clinical milestones.

In a company statement, Burwell said he joined Nurix at what he described as an exciting inflection point. CEO Arthur Sands echoed this sentiment, noting that Burwell’s expertise in scaling organizations will be instrumental in handling Nurix through its next phase. While the company did not specify what this phase entails or provide timelines for anticipated milestones, the hiring of Burwell signals that Nurix is positioning itself for substantial growth and transformation.

Both appointments reflect a broader pattern in the biotech sector, where companies approaching clinical milestones or preparing for expansion often look to bring in HR leaders with experience scaling organizations. Wedel’s background at Cytek and Burwell’s tenure at Bolt Biotherapeutics both include experience supporting growth-stage companies in the life sciences space, making them well-positioned to drive organizational growth and development at Avenzo and Nurix, respectively.

Avenzo and Nurix join a handful of biotech firms that have recently added senior HR talent as they move through different stages of development. The hirings come as the broader biotech industry continues to handle a challenging funding environment while advancing research programs. Despite these challenges, biotech companies are demonstrating a commitment to strategic HR investments, recognizing the critical role HR plays in driving organizational growth and success.
