From September 2026, the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in India will be available only in a computer-based format, according to IDP Education. The move aims to provide candidates with more flexibility, speed, and convenience in taking the test. The IELTS assessment pattern will remain unchanged.
The transition will be applicable to Indians from next September, and IELTS on paper will remain available in India till the end of August 2026. Candidates who want to appear in the paper-based test can register for the last three tests held on July 25, August 6, and August 22, 2026.
IELTS on computer will have the same exam pattern, level of difficulty, and scoring system as the paper-based test. The computer version will include extra facilities, such as an on-screen timer, a more user-friendly interface for moving between questions, and a digital interface that will support candidates during the test.

Starting from September 2026, students in India will be able to opt for two IELTS on computer options. The IELTS on computer test format will have listening, reading, and writing completed on a computer, and a certified IELTS examiner will conduct the speaking test in person.
IELTS on computer (writing on paper) will be an option for candidates to take the listening and reading papers on a computer and send the writing paper by post. The speaking test will continue to be administered in-person by a certified examiner. In both cases, the computer-based tests will be scored exactly as the on-paper test is currently scored, and will have a similar level of difficulty.
Candidates opting for the computer version will find typing answers directly on the computer screen, editing answers in the writing section, and listening to clear audio via headphones in the listening section to be beneficial. The International English Language Testing System is a widely recognized test for English language proficiency.
